Catalanotto lifts Rangers past Cubs

Baseball Betting Lines

06/21/2007 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Frank Catalanotto's base hit in the bottom of the ninth pushed Texas past Chicago, 6-5, in the finale of a three-game interleague series.

Against Bob Howry (3-4), Kenny Lofton led off the ninth with a single, and went to second on Adam Melhuse's sacrifice bunt. Brad Wilkerson followed with a comebacker to the mound, and although Lofton was caught in a rundown between second and third, Howry failed to get the ball into second for the out, leaving men on first and second. Catalanotto then lofted a slicing ball to right field which bounced out of Angel Pagan's glove as he dove near the foul line, allowing Lofton to score the winning run.

Eric Gagne (2-0) held the Cubs off the board in the ninth to earn the victory. Starter Vicente Padilla allowed 10 hits and four runs over four-plus innings, fanning five and walking three.

Victor Diaz and Melhuse homered for the Rangers, who have won two straight and three of four. Marlon Byrd was 2-for-4 with a two-run single.

Ted Lilly gave up six hits and five runs over seven innings in his start for Chicago. He finished with 10 strikeouts, the most he has recorded in one start since coming to the Cubs.

Derrek Lee went 3-for-4, scored a run and drove in two for the Cubs, who have dropped two in a row and four of five. Pagan finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, Alfonso Soriano collected two hits and scored a run, and Mark DeRosa and Rob Bowen knocked in a run each.

Chicago faced a five-run deficit after three innings, but chipped away at the lead and tied the contest.

Lee put the Cubs on the board with an RBI single in the fifth. DeRosa followed two batters later with an RBI single, and Bowen looped a single into right to plate another run. Pagan's single brought in DeRosa for a 5-4 game and signaled Padilla's exit. Willie Eyre came on to get Felix Pie to ground into a fielder's choice and Ryan Theriot to hit into an inning-ending double play.

In the sixth, Soriano led off with a double, moved to third on Mike Fontenot's ground out, and scored on Lee's single to forge a 5-5 tie. Daryle Ward walked and DeRosa struck out, then with Bowen at the plate, a wild pitch moved the runners up. However, Bowen fanned to end the frame.

The game remained deadlocked until the fateful ninth, which rendered the Cubs' rally moot.

Chicago loaded the bases in the second as Bowen walked, Pagan doubled and Pie walked. Padilla worked his way out of the jam, as Theriot flew out to right and the runners did not advance, Soriano lined to short and Fontenot flew out to center.

Diaz put the Rangers up 2-0 in the home half, with an opposite-field shot that barely cleared the wall in right. Melhuse followed with a homer to left and a 3-0 lead. It was the second time in two days that Texas hit back-to-back home runs.

Byrd pushed the lead to 5-0 on a two-run single in the third.

Game Notes

Michael Young, who owns the highest average in the history of interleague play (.349), finished 1-for-4...Texas remains home to begin a three-game interleague set with intra-state rival Houston on Friday, while the Cubs head to the South Side of Chicago for a three-game series with the White Sox.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
