Byars' putback lifts No. 17 Vanderbilt past Kentucky

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/25/2007 - Nashville, TN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Derrick Byars' rebound putback with under 30 seconds left gave Vanderbilt its first lead of the game, and guided the team to a 67-65 win over Kentucky at Memorial Gym.

Byars finished with a game-high 26 points and also collected six rebounds for 17th-ranked Vanderbilt (19-9, 9-5 SEC), which claimed sole possession of second place in the SEC Eastern Division with the win. Shan Foster donated 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and was a key factor down the stretch.

Bobby Perry netted 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Jodie Meeks scored 15 for the Wildcats (19-9, 8-6), who have dropped four of their last five contests.

Kentucky held a 32-23 lead at halftime and pushed the advantage into double digits with about 14 minutes remaining in the contest, but Vanderbilt fought back.

Foster answered with back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 46-42, then converted a layup attempt moments later to pull the home team within two.

The Wildcats continued to fend off the Commodores in the final minutes before Vanderbilt finally broke through.

With 29 seconds on the clock and Kentucky clinging to a 65-63 lead, Byars drew a foul to earn a trip to the charity stripe. His first shot was true but the second rimmed out. A fortunate bounce, however, allowed Byars to grab the offensive rebound, and he followed with a one-handed floater in the lane to give his club a 66-65 advantage.

The defense came up with a turnover on the other end before Foster was fouled and made 1-of-2 from the line.

The Wildcats got the ball back with nine seconds, but Ramel Bradley's heave as the buzzer sounded was off the mark.

Game Notes

The Commodores have won 13 straight at home, and hold a 7-0 mark at Memorial Gym in league play this season...Kentucky owns a commanding 129-41 advantage between the two schools. Vanderbilt however, has won the last four meetings over the Wildcats, including a 72-67 triumph earlier this season in Rupp Arena.

MySportsbook.com Posts Heisman Trophy Odds

With 3,919 passing yards, 32 touchdowns and a mere seven interceptions last season, combined with a powerful South Bend Heisman legacy, odds makers at MySportsbook.com have given Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn the best Heisman Trophy odds at 5-2.

Quinn isn’t the only big man on campus this season.  Oklahoma junior running back and 2004 Heisman runner-up Adrian Peterson, listed at 7-2, rushed for a combined 3,033 yards in his first two years as a college player and will give Quinn a run for his money.

This online sportsbook has also listed Troy Smith, Ohio State senior quarterback, as another strong favorite to win the 72nd Heisman Trophy.  A 7-1 bet, Smith threw for 2,282 yards last season and also led the Buckeyes to a convincing 34-20 victory over Quinn and the Fighting Irish in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.

Football Betting Lines

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
